Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South

By: Hopkins, Pauline E.

Price: $3,000.00

Book Condition: Very Good

Contending Forces is a novel by an African-American woman and is quite uncommon in the first edition. This copy has been professionally repaired. The hinges have been strengthened and loose pages have been reattached. Front endpapers have cosmetic repairs where the top right tips were torn away, and the green cloth covers with yellow and red titles and illustrations have been cleaned. There appear to have been color variants for the covers. This is a bright and attractive copy of this novel by a New England, African-American woman. The novel deals with race and society in both the North and South and espouses an activist attitude much like that of Du Bois. Important and uncommon novel. WorldCat results for the first edition are difficult to pin down (because there have been so many reprints) but, as best I can tell, there are fewer than thirty copies of the first in libraries. ; B&W Plates and over Design; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 402 pages
