Deep green cloth with gilt titles and decorations on front and spine. (There were apparently several variants in the color of the cloth none of which takes pecedence.) This copy has some edge, corner and surface wear along with an area of small dark stains on the front. See scan. There is a small (2 1/2 X 3 1/2) rectangle of paper pasted to the top right corner of the rear pastedown. This and a small area of light discoloration at the bottom of the spine may indicate that this copy was once in a library. I can find no other evidence that it was. The book is square and securely bound, a solid copy. Scott Bond was born a slave in Mississippi but managed, by the end of his life, to become a quite wealthy farmer in Arkansas. This book was written by his son and one of his farm managers. Much of the book, though, is compiled from statements by Bond himself. He espoused the self-help and hard-work philosophy of Booker T. Washington. ; B&W Photographs; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 383 pages
