He is not a polished poet, but his lines do have power. He does poetic portraits of fifteen mainly contemporary, at the time, African Americans: Jackie Robinson, Marion Anderson, George Washington Carver, Althea Gibson, Mahalia Jackson, Nat King Cole, Langston Hughes, Louis Armstrong, Ralph Bunche, Booker T.
