Brown patterned cloth with gilt titles and decoration on spine. This copy has some edge and corner wear with bumps on the corners and light damage at spine ends. A few light areas, including one streak, on front. See scan. Otherwise the book is square and securely bound. Some interior aging. The copyright page lists the date as 1867, but the title page has 1868. This is correct for the first edition of this book. On the title page there is either a light blue stamp or the lightly printed name, in blue, of "Henry Chadwick." This book came with a group of books that all had some indication of having belonged to Henry Chadwick, a sportswriter who popularized baseball and is in the Hall of Fame. His signature is quite valuable. It is also frequently forged. I have examined the name and it could be Chadwick's, but I am not comfortable saying that it is for certain. I have included a scan of the name. Chadwick aside, Waiting for the Verdict is an important book by a somewhat overlooked female writer, the mother of Richard Harding Davis. The book deals with a former slave who passes for white, becomes a medical doctor and marries into a white family. The ending shows that this is not romance but realism. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 361 pages
