White and Negro Spirituals : Their Life Span and Kinship

By: Jackson, George Pullen

Price: $65.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Very Good+ with no dust jacket

Rust-red cloth with somewhat faded white titles on spine. Otherwise, only very light, general wear. Folded sheet music for Amazing Grace laid in. The book is not dated but does have "1943" at end of "Prefatory Acknowlegements." This publisher listed printings after the first, and this copy does not indicate any later printing. I suspect that this is the first printing but I am not sure. This is one of Pullen's well-known studies of Southern religious music. Besides the subtitles there are blurbs stating: "Tracing 200 years of Untrammeled Song Making and Singing among our Country Folk, with 116 Songs as Sung by Both Races." Excellent work on the influence of blacks and whites on each other. ; B&W Illustrations and Musical Notation; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 349 pages
