Green, patterned cloth with rust backstrip. Much edge and corner wear along with sunning/fading on covers. Faded gilt titles on spine. Book is sqiuare and binding secure. ; B&W Drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 135 pages; Brown's first book. Much of the poetry is in dialect , but Brown was an urban and urbane college professor much interested in folklore, blues, jazz and the lives of rural African-Americans. His use of dialect was a conscious technique to move beyond the verse that had been forced on many earlier African-American poets and show the power inherent in black speech and language. His poetry was somewhat overlooked when originally published but is now much respected. His reputation continues to grow. Signed by Brown with generic inscription "In Friendship," on ffep. Beautifull B&W illustrations (they look like woodcuts, though the title page says they are drawings) by E. Simms Campbell, most known for his cartoons in Esquire and other magazines and his book, Cuties in Arms.
