Full calf, but covers have been detached and reattached. Back cover is just hanging on. Board on front right corner is gone so only the leather remains (see scan. ) Much edge and corner wear. Most of the prelims are gone and book begins with An Index to the Second Volume which is essentially a table of contents. Interior pages are toned. Some damage to bottom right corner for first twenty pages or so. Still, text block is in sufficiently good condition that this is a candidate for rebinding. There are five raised bands on the spine and the title in gilt is still in quite good shape. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 439 + pages; Since the title page for this volume is missing, I am guessing at the publisher and date. I am almost positive that Gillyflower was the publisher because following the Sixteenth Book of The Annals, ending on p. 439, there is a four page catalogue of "Works Printed for, and Sold by Matthew Gillyflower, at the Spread-Eagle, in Westminster Hall." The date is less sure, but based on some books in the catalogue, this one seems to be from the late 17th century. Also, the catalogue of works published by Gillyflower is followed by an essay, The Life of Agricola by John Potenger which is itself followed by A Discourse of the Situations, Customs and People of Germany by Tacitus. All of these works, including The Annals are in English so that someone who knows more about the publishing history of Tacitus in English can date this more precisely than I. This is Volume II only of, I believe, three, though, once agin , I am not sure. Nonetheless, this is still a scarce, early English publication of Tacitus and other works.
