Jacket art by John Alan Maxwell. Born in Augusta Georgia, Yerby was the first African American to write a best-selling novel and to have a book purchased by a Hollywood studio for a film adaptation. Dial Press played down the fact that he was African-American. This was Yerby's third novel. This novel defines "swashbuckler."
