Full leather with gilt decorations on covers and gilt title and decration on spine. This copy has been professionally cleaned and repaired. The covers, which were loose, have been reinforced with an archival tape and the spine has been carefully repaired. There is loss at spine ends and some edge, corner and surface wear. The interior is toned/ foxed and there is a bookplate on the front pastedown indicating that the book belonged to Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Carter and was once part of the Whittle-McDowell Collection. (I'm not sure of the location of that collection, though this book came from a collector in Chattanooga, Tennessee.) Overall this copy is VG-. Martin Ruter was a prominent early Methodist who received his initial credentials from Francis Asbury. He was instrumental in founding three educational institutions: New Market Academy (New Hampshire), Augusta College (Kentucky), and Allegheny College (Pennsylvania). He spent parts of the 1820's and 30's as Book Agent for the new Methodist Book Concern in Cinc
