This is the first edition of this monumental study, made all the more valuable as it was written by one of the most active conductors on the Railroad, and written shortly after the Civil War and emancipation. The book was sold by subscription with four variant bindings. This binding is listed on the title page as "Paneled Style, full gilt ... 4.50. This copy has essentially light general edge, corner and surface wear with anticipated aging along with some light fading of titles and ornamentation. A former owner, William H. Huff, has signed his name here and there throughout the book. There is also a picture of Daniel in the Lion's Den adhered to the front pastedown and signed in the margin by Huff.
