Stapled, pictorial wraps with black titles and image of US Flag and American Eagle standing on Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines in full color on front. The back shows the British Lion with the Union Jack standing on Australia, India, Great Britain and Canada. The title on the back is Plantation Melodies. This copy has some edge, corner and surface wear including some old stains and general aging. Still square and securely bound with no parting or looseness. The Canadian Colored Concert Co. seems to have started performing as the Canadian Jubilee Singers. Under that name, they issued songbooks similar to this one. At some point, perhaps because they began to enlarge their repertoire, the name changed to the Canadian Colored Concert Co. While this booklet is undated, the image on the front wrap suggests a date around the time of the Spanish-American War. I suspect that the back wrap was a variant used for the front in England and its dependencies. This black singing group, while Canadian, was patterned after the Fisk Jubilee Singers. They were quite popular, consisting of a chorus of 10 males and female singers, a male quartet and an orchestra. Groups like this were highly influential in the development of black gospel music, jazz and the blues. As best I can tell, WorldCat lists no more than 8 copies of this specific booklet in libraries and some of those may be microforms. Uncommon title. ; Musical Notation for some Songs; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 54 +Index pages
