This is a Salesman's Sample copy of a book that was published with the title The Story of a Rising Race followed by the title listed here. I have included a scan of the 1st Edition of the published book that shows the change. (It would be of interest to know why the title was changed.) This salesman's copy has some edge, corner and surface wear along with some interior marginal notes and other writing by a former owner, Prof. J. H. Gordon. The binding is somewhat loose because the the pages at the end of this copy, where the salesman would have written the names and addresses of purchasers have been torn out. (The pages were probably removed by the sales agent to send to the publisher.) For all its problems, this is still a good and intriguing copy of this work. The front and back covers show the two bindings that were available and the two possible spines are attached as a flap fold inside of the front cover. The text block includes the proposed title page (which was changed before publication), sample text pages and many of the illustrations of prominent African-Americans of the time. All pages, except for the salesman's order blank pages are included. This book was sold by subscription only. The former owner of this copy, Prof. Gordon, seems to have been an African-American minister. I have two other books that he owned. Theoretically, he could have been the salesman. Confederate General and Georgia Governor, John B. Gordon, wrote the Introduction for this book.; B&W Photographs and Illustrations; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; Thorough study of African-Americans and their contributions to American society at the turn of the 20th century. Many photos of prominent African-Americans from that time period.
