Wooden boards with blue paper covers and maroon leather backstrip. Part of boards both front and back is missing and most of blue paper on front is gone (see scan). If there were titles, they are gone. Interior has some toning and sunning with more on the endpapers. Title page is present but if any other prelims came before it, they are gone. If there were rear endpapers, they are missing. I have been unable to find a comparable copy of this book. There is also wear on the edges of some interior pages. Interestingly , the book is square and the binding, while fragile, is reasonably secure, with no tears or parting. Some individual pages are pulled but none are completely loose. ; Oblong 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 126 pages; This is a very early shaped-note songbook, considered by most researchers to be the first, though this is not the first edition. The only date is on the page after the title page under a note with the title, Advertisement. This note is dated 1798, however, a number of editions were published after the First with one from Albany in 1831 seemingly the last. I think this is the 1831 edition. The ownership name "Lucinda Lanier's book" is written on the back of the title page and other internal evidence indicates that the book came from Eatonton, Georgia. Interesting and unusual bit of Americana dealing with music.
