Typee :A Peep At Polynesian Life During a Four Month Residence in Valley of the Marquesas

Price: $700.00

Quantity: 1 available

Quarterbound leather with dark marbelized paper. Spine has rolled bands with gilt decoration and the title in gilt on a red square. At the bottom of the spine is the faded name W. Graham, Jr. , who, I think, did the special binding for this specific copy. This edition was issued in both wraps and cloth. This appears to be a contemporary binding. There is edge and corner wear to the boards in spots and some scuffing on the paper covers and on the leather. However the book is square and the binding is secure with no parts or tears. All pages are present and the interior is quite attractive except for light toning and an old damp stain which affects the bottom area and a smaller area on top of a number of pages toward the front. This old damp stain seems to have caused some weakness in the paper at the hinge area of the front free endpapers where there is a bit of parting or tearing, not affecting the hinge, just the paper. Otherwise, all pages are supple. Overall the book is G+ to VG-. Solid and attractive copy of an important American work. ; Map; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 307 pages; The publishing history of Typee is difficult to sort out. It was first published in England. The first American edition was in March of 1846, in two volumes without the Sequel. For various reasons, a Revised Edition, with a Sequel was issued in August of 1846 in one volume with two parts, each part having its own title page. This copy appears to be the first issue of the Revised Edition though there are no ads in the back. Some bibliographies call for the ads; others do not.
