Important Supreme Court case in which the Court found for Samuel Worcester, missionary to the Cherokee Indians who had been imprisoned by the State of Georgia. Worcester asserted that Georgia had no jurisdiction over the Cherokee who were a sovereign nation. The Court found for Worcester, though the ruling did not stop the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia and the resulting Trail of Tears. Stephen Breyer discusses the importance of this case at some length in his new book. This pamphlet exists in two formats. This is the 20 page version without Justice McLean's opinion. Howes M318.
