Brown blind-stamped cloth, professionally rebacked with matching brown cloth and paper label with title and author. Original boards. Hinges have been tightened and book is square and securely bound. All lithographs of engravings are present with tissue guards along with the foldout map and chart. The interior has foxing and toning, particularly on endpapers and illustrations, There have been some old dampstains on the top that affect some inteior pages at front and back but only a few in each case. Solid and attractive copy: G+ to VG-. (See scans. ) ; B&B Lithographs and Map; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 295 pages; In the mid-19th century there was competition to find the fastest route to the Pacific. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the narrowest point of the Mexican peninsula and was thought to be a logical route. This book is the report of a commission to explore possibilities. The US and Mexico never reached an agreement. This copy is from the Library of General Winfield Scott, noted in a secretarial hand at the top of the front pastedown. An ink inscription at the top of the title page reads: "With the Respects of P. A. Hargrus." Attractive copy with interesting associations. Sabin 3480. sold Crott 1.6.16

This was one of the earliest emigrant's guides to the early wextern movement in the US. When this book was published, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky were still parts of the west.
