The Task Fore-Edge Painting of Confederate Horse Artillery Lieutenant, Cowper, Thomas
1 Cowper, Thomas The Task Fore-Edge Painting of Confederate Horse Artillery Lieutenant
London C. Whittingham, Printed for John Sharpe 1817 Unknown; unknown Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by R. Westall
Light scuffing to spine, corners rubbed, blue pastedowns and ffep slightly foxed, minor foxing throughout. Pages facing engravings at beginning of each chapter show transfer. Gilt decorations on spine and leather boards bright. Overall a very attactive copy. Former owner's name in beautiful script on ffep dated 1820.; Engravings; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 220 pages; While it is common for the paintings on fore-edge painted books to be done some time after publication, and to have little or no relationship to the book, this is still an unusual example. The book was published in 1817, a reprint of Cowper's 1785 6000 line poem in free verse. Taken by itself, this is a very nice edition, with engravings by R Westall at the start of each of the six chapters. The original owner, Clementine Brown, has signed the book twice and dated it 1820. Much later, probably during or slightly after the Civil WAr, the fore-edge painting was added. A note in the book says that it is a Confederate Horse Artillery Lieutenant, and the uniform matches a description of the "official" uniform. The blue and red of the uniform are still bright.
