Blindstamped, deep brown cloth with gilt decoration and titles. Some edge and corner wear along with expected aging both interior and exterior. Some pages ar slightly pulled but the binding is secure and the book is square. A handwritten sheet on Improved Babbit Metals is pasted to the rear pastedown. Both pastedowns and endpapers have bold stamps from the Napanoch New York Axe Company and small embossed stamps from C. S. Brigham Company Axes & Tools also of Napanoch. This was probably an on hand reference for both companies. Overall, the book is G to VG. This is a manual for metalworkers from the fmid-nineteenth century by Oliver Byrne. It was published by Henry Carey Baird in Philadelphia, 1851.It has 575 pages including Index with 16 more pages of ads,.Fully illustrated with B&W drawings. It covers topics dealing with the manufacture of metals, including forging, welding, soldering, casting, joining, and raising. It also gives instructions on the use of various tools such as shears, punches, drill, etc. There are several chapters on electrolyte processes. State of the art for 1851.
