Garden City Doubleday, Page & Company 1917 Later Printing Hardcover Very Good- with no dust jacket 
The seven volumes are similar in condition. Greenish cloth boards show some wear to corners and edges, spines and foredges are sunned, pages are toned, especially around the edges. However, bindings are tight, books are complete, no markings. The books came from the collection of the former chief horticulturist at Barnsley Gardens in Northwest Georgia. They had been in the nursery shop and then storage for many years and have a very slight "earthy" smell. ; B&W Drawings & Photos; Thick 8vo 8" to 9" tall; 600+ each pages; This set of seven volumes is from the Publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Experiment Stations. Department staff as well as authorities from all over the country contributed to the books. The volumes include: Vol I, Farm Animal, Breeding, Feeding, Care, Dairy Farming; Vol II, Diseases of Horses, Swine and Poultry, Their Prevention and CureVol III, Diseases of Cattle, Sheep, Goats. Cats, Dogs, Their Prevention And Cure; Vol IV, Grass Hay Grains Vegetables, Vol V, Fruits, Forests, Flowers, Cotton, Tobacco, Sugar Beets, Sugar Cane, Etc. ; Vol VI, Plant Diseases, Prevention and Cure, Insects and Insecticuides, Fungi and Fungicides; Vol VII, Farming Methods. -Soils, Fertilizers, Irrigation, Rotation, Buildings. Originally, cord bound newsprint with black titles and ornate illustration. The cord binding is gone, except for one small piece so the pages are loose though they are holding together quite well. Someone with cord and a sure sewing hand, could easily put a new piece of cord in. There is some edge and corner wear but overall the magazine is in remarkably nicecondition. ; B&W Illustrations; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 36 pages; Numerous articles on a variety of topics related to farming and agriculture. This is not a reprint but the original magazine.

Pictorial covers with toning on foredges and on some interior pages, especially endpapers. The name "WHEATON" is lettered on the front foredge. The book is square and securely bound but shows light, general wear from use. ; Color Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 646 pages; This was Steve Wheaton's working copy of Georgia horticulturalist Armitage's compendium on perennials. Wheaton was the horticulturalist who did the restoration plantings around 1990 for Barnsley Gardens, the antebellum estate near Adairsville, Georgia. Besides Wheaton's name on the foredge, there is an inscription to him on the title page signed by Armitage. Armitage congratulates Wheaton for his work at Barnsley and expresses appreciation for his being allowed to be part of the process. Great, and historically important, association between Wheaton, Barnsley Gardens and the noted Georgia botanist, Allan Armitage. ; Signed by Author

Front flap of dustjacket has been folded vertically and this fold extends to a slight "bend" in the first 20 or so pages. There are gift inscription on the front and back of the ffep, the one on the back being a child's. Otherwise, except for a very slight musty odor, the book is VG+. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 194 pages; If you have ever wondere why so many garden plants are named for people and who these people are, this is a book for you. The stories are entertaining and enlightening. Copeland began her serious studies in the field of horticulture began at the University of Georgia in 1992. She lives and gardens in Atlanta, Georgia, where she is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Atlanta History Center, the Southeastern Flower Show, and Gardens for Peace. Armitage is well known as a writer, speaker and researcher and at the University of Georgia, he runs the research gardens where new plant material from most of the flower breeders in the world is evaluated.

On the front free endpaper is a bookplate from the Petersborough New Hampshire Library that indicates this book was withdrawn. I suspect that the paper and glueing on the pastedowns has something to do with the way the book was bound in the library or from the card pockets. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 544 pages; This is a good reference/reading copy of this well-known work on rock gardens and alpines.
