The Southern Literary Messenger
1 The Southern Literary Messenger
Richmond P. D. Bernard 1843 Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
This is a bound volume (12 issues) for the year 1843. Some of the individual issues have wrappers; some do not. This volume has been rebacked though the original title has been pasted on the spine. A sh ort poem has been removed from page 257 and there is some internal foxing and occasional toning or staining. The marbelized bindings show wear on the edges and corners and there is some loss on the back. The endpapers were replaced when the volume was rebacked. Overall this volume is square and securely bound and looks better than it sounds. (see scan); B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 720 pages; The Southern Literary Messenger was published in Richmond from 1834 to 1864. Edgar Allen Poe was a major contributor and editor beginning in 1835 to around 1840. This is a complete bound volume of the 12 issues for 1843, which was the year that the original publisher Thomas Willis White died and Benjamin Blake Minor became editor and publisher. P. D. Bernard is listed on some issues as Publisher. This is a solid volume of a historic Southern journal.
