Discours Sur L'Histoire Universelle, Bossuet, J. B.
3 Bossuet, J. B. Discours Sur L'Histoire Universelle
Paris L. Curmer 1839 Hardcover Good
This book is in French. It is a difficult book to grade. It is full dark-brown or black leather with gilt titles on the spine which has five rolled bands. Unfortunately there is significant insect damage on the front and rear covers from some little bug that really liked leather. Oddly, the spine is untouched, so the book would look great on a shelf. All foredges are gilt and in beautiful condition. The book is square and the binding secure. The book was printed on a higher quality paper so that the interior is bright. Except that -- starting at pp. 416 and 417 there is heavy toning on each page to the end. I don't have a clue why this change occur. There are a few other pages scattered through the book that are toned. As well all pages with plates are toned; I would guess from the acidic nature of the paper in this case. There is a beautiful title page in color. Please look at the scans. The book has some excellent features and some rotten ones. ; Vol. 1; B&W Plates from Engravings and Decorations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 475 pages; Volume 1 only. I cannot find a date but it is ca. 1839. Introduction on Bossuet by M. Tissot. The front pastedown and ffep have interesting small bookplates. The first is printed "The Library, St. Charles House, Norham Gardens, Oxford" followed by a blank area which has the initials, "H. J." in pencil. The second bookplate is printed, "Ex Libris, Gul. Bern. O'Dowd." The book was from O'Dowd's personal library so there are no other library markings or indicia.

The Secrets of Mary Celeste And Other Sea Fare, Bradford, Gershom
4 Bradford, Gershom The Secrets of Mary Celeste And Other Sea Fare
Barre MA Barre Publishing 1966 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Good+ dust jacket Illustrated by Harold Durand White
Book has only light shelf wear. Jacket has an old dampstain along the spine that has lightened that area slightly -- see scan.. The stain must have occurred when the jacket was off the book because I see no staining on the book. Without the stain, the jacket would match the condition of the book. ; B&W Drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 96 pages; The Mary Celeste was one of the great sea mysteries, sometimes associated with the Bermuda Triangle. This book offers a reasonable explanation. This was a Review Copy to the Atlanta Constitution. The slip from Barre Publishing is laid in.

Pompeiana. the Topography, Edifices, and Ornaments of Pompeii., Gell, Sir William and John P. Gandy
7 Gell, Sir William and John P. Gandy Pompeiana. the Topography, Edifices, and Ornaments of Pompeii.
London Henry G. Bohn 1852 Third Edition Hardcover Poor
This is actually a very nice copy of Popeiana with two major flaws -- the front cover is detached and the back cover is missing. Everything else, spine, endpapers and text block with all prints, is present and in quite nice shape. The front endpapers and second ffep are still attached to the front cover. This is a candidate fro a rebind or even a restoration if a back cover could be located. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 208 pages; Third edition of famou book on Pompeii with many beautiful plates, maps and diagrams. On the ffep there is a pasted down notice that this book was awarded as a prize to a top student in 1866. This notice is on one of the pages with the detached front cover.
