This book seems to have been a long term project for Charters and Hawley. The proof copies were printed for Robert Hawley and friends. The inscription says this is the first copy. Charters is most famous for his writing on music, especially blues and early jazz, but he is also a prolific poet, novelist, essayist and translator of Swedish. This book is a lyrical account of a year in the countryside of near New London, New Hampshire. Part poetry, part prose. ; Signed by Author

Front hinge seems to have been reinforced at some point, probably with glue and some sort of binding paper which has caused the ffep and the front pastedown to adher slightly in the gutter. Still a solid copy. ; Vol. 3; B&W Engraved Portraits; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 478 pages; This vlume starts with Charles II but includes a number of famous names like Andrew Marvell, Ben Jonson, William Harvey and John Milton. The portraits are especially attractive. This is Volume III only.
