The Philosophical Dictionary : or the Opinions of Modern Philosophers on Metaphysical, Moral, and Political Subjects
1 The Philosophical Dictionary : or the Opinions of Modern Philosophers on Metaphysical, Moral, and Political Subjects
London G. G. J. and J. Robinson 1786 Hardcover Good
Full leather with a sunned spine which has caused the leather to darken and crack slightly. Also, if there was a title on the spine , it is gone (see scan. ) Hinges have been reinforced but the book is square and the binding seems secure though somewhat stiff. First page is the title page so any other prelims are missing though it is hard to tell. All in all, not a bad looking copy for all its problems. ; Vol. 3; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 360 pages; Volume 3 only.

Practical Philosophy or Social Life Or the Art of Conversing with Men after the German of Baron Knigge, Knigge, Adolph Freiherr (Baron) [Peter Will, Trans. ]
4 Knigge, Adolph Freiherr (Baron) [Peter Will, Trans. ] Practical Philosophy or Social Life Or the Art of Conversing with Men after the German of Baron Knigge
Lansingburgh NY Penniman & Bliss 1805 First American Edition; First Printing Hardcover Good
Full leather with faded titles in gilt on spine. Edge and corner wear along with some scuffs to the leather. The covers have been reinforced but seem secure though care is recommended. Book is square and complete. Interior toning. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 368 pages; This is the stated First American Edition of Baron Knigge's sociological/philosophical work on human relations. Knigge's book was often viewd as a manual of etiquette so that the term "Knigge" in German came to mean something like "good manners." The book , however, is more on the ways that humans should interact to live a morally good life. This English translation may be more of a free interpretation by Peter Will since it says "after the German" rather than "translated from the German. " This volume was published in Lansingburgh New York which is now a part of Troy. Interesting early New York imprint.
