1 Sanchez, Thomas (SJ) Disputationum De Sancto Matrimonii Sacramento
Antwerp Ex Officina Heredum Martini NUTII 1620 Hardcover
Contemporary, or close to contemporary, leather binding, hand-tooled blind stamping. The spine has raised bands along with gilt titles and decorations - bottom decoration and leather partially missing - less than dime-sized. All gilt is still bright. Loss of some leather on corners and along edges (see scan). Interior toning mostly on edges with some foxing here and there. A few contemporary notes and occasional underlining. Owneship stamp - Rev. Thomas Boyle - twice on title page. There are also four words that I cannot read written in ink (see scan of title page) . Book is still square and securely bound with no tears or parting. Solid book, published in the same year the pilgrims landed at Plymouth. ; Vol. 1/3/2012; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 500 pages; This is the 1620, Antwerp edition, of this well-known work, which I translate loosely as Arguments Concerning the Holy Sacrament of Marriage. The first printing of any part of this book dates to the late 16th century. The first printing of all three volumes together was in 1605. This early printing from Antwerp in 1620 does not seem to be recorded -- the 1626 Antwerp edition is much easier to find. This work has a history of controversy since it deals, rather explicitly, with numerous sexual aspects of marriage. One Internet blogger notes, "Truly a very storehouse of curious facts dealing with such matters as adultery, copulation, virginity, bestiality, bigamy, demons, frigidity, hermaphrodites, impotence, incest, kissing and sodomy. It was promptly placed on the Index of Forbidden Books." The work directly takes up these sexual subjects to determine whether they are sinful and if so whether the sin is mortal or venial -- useful information for the married. (Several writers have noted that Pope Benedict's comments on the possible acceptable use of condoms followed in the Jesuitical tradition of argument represented by Sanchez. ) Sanchez is rather liberal in his conclusions and his graphic language makes for steamy reading. The Catholic Encyclopedia Online notes that Sanchez became a Jesuit at age 17 and was said to have "carried his baptismal innocence to the grave" -- making the occasional lubricity of this work even more curious.
