Book has light edge wear and aging with some rubbing at corners. Still square and securely bound. Jacket is tattered along the edges with a number of chips. Loss at top of spine. Jacket is heavily rubbed along folds. Respected South Carolina author's affectionate but patronizing account of African-Americans who worked on his estate, Hampton. Underlying Rutledge's stories is a picture of the complex, and at times contradictory, relationship that existed between some black and white Southernors before the Civil Rights Movement. ; B&W Photographs; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 159 +photos pages
