New York Johnson, Fry and Co. 1861 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good Illustrated by Alonzo Chappel and Thomas Nast 
Quarterbound leather with black-pebbled cloth. Gilt titles on spine with four raised bands. Leather has some scuffing and there is some edge and corner wear. Interior is lightly age-toned. Book is square and securely bound. A VG copy of Vol. 3 only. The publication date of 1861 is for the first volume of this three volume set which was issued together. This volume could not have been printed before 1865. The set is a near contemporaneous account of the Civil War. This is an excellent copy of Vol. 3. The steel plate engravings based on art by Chappel and Nast are quite impressive. ; Steel Engravings; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 642 pages

New York Johnson, Wilson and Company 1873 Hardcover Very Good- with no dust jacket 
Quarterbound leather with brown, pebbled covers and gilt titles, Five rolled bands on spine with gilt titles and blindstamped decorations. Book has light general wear and aging but is square and securely bound -- a handsome volume. ; B&W Steel Engravings; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 638 pages; All biographies and portraits are present. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the order. This is the second volume only. It starts with Daniel O'Connell and ends with Fanny Kemble.. The portraits from very fine steel point engravings are generally very attractive and include a sample signature. Connell Otto von Bismarck and Washington Irving, among many others, come in between, On the front pastedown is a sticker from Bookseller and Binder, N. D.
